10:15 am - Christmas 2009
Last night a bunch of friends came over to help me celebrate the winter holiday. Since [info]toob was in Arkansas visiting family, it was the perfect time to throw a wild and raucous party while the parents were out. :D

There was food and wine and Love Actually, which is a movie that just gets me almost every time in a completely different way. Liam Neeson carrying his wife's coffin out of the church to the tune of the Bay City Rollers choked me up a bit. It was absurd and funny, but the look of bewildered grief on his face... And when Colin Firth proposes to his Portugese maid in broken grade-school language-tape speak just made me so happy. It is a movie that shamelessly uses every rom-com cliche in the book, but its joy is infectious and it just sweeps you up. I'm definitely making this a Christmas tradition.

[info]toob hid presents all over the house for me to find on Christmas before he left, but I couldn't wait and everyone helped me with the scavenger hunt. They were rhyming clues that were fun and a little tricky; we ended up needing to use a thesaurus for the first one ("It could mean to steal or it could mean your face, but in this case it's something of Mat's that can easily break!"), and [info]andreal helped out with the last one. My dragon should really do more puzzles for people; he has a really great knack for it. Clever, tricksy dragon.

I got precisely what I asked for: clothes, books and a DS game. They were all really, really neat. My personal favorites are a purple flannel shirt, a Ravens Flacco jersey(!!!) and a signed first edition of Harlan Ellison's Deathbird Stories(!!!!!!! :D :D <3). I'm getting a decent, small collection of special edition books and it just makes me wiggle with glee!

Merry Christmas, everyone. Also, Happy Yule, Solid Kwanzaa, OK Festivus and Happy Chanukah. No matter what you're doing today (even if it's not something you would have preferred), please remember the loved ones in your life and the great things you have going for you. It's still not too late to have a good holiday. :)

10:39 pm - in which I am an insufferable hippie
Hello, dharma pals. =) I have a very mundane question for you.

I meditate with a Vipassana sangha on Sundays. On the first Sunday of every month there's a little potluck afterward. I ordinarily flee from this event, as I'm not very imaginative where food is concerned. Every once in a strange while, though, I like to make tea eggs. Making them is joyful to me, like a little ritual. The boiling tea/spice/soy mixture perfumes my apartment, and the eggs come out looking like marble. I've just gotten some eggs from a local farm with free-range chickens. So just now, I thought: say, wouldn't some locally/humanely-sourced tea eggs be lovely funny things to bring to sangha potluck?

But then I thought hrm, not vegan. Would that be Not OK? I know the snacks people bring are always vegetarian, but vegan I'm not sure. I will first carefully gauge the level of ova-consumption among my fellow sitters so I don't make a terrible faux pas. In the meantime, though, I just thought I'd bounce it off you guys. This is not an invitation to debate the role of veg*nism in Buddhism! It's just a question about wanting to offer something, and not wanting to disrespect others in doing so.

What do you think? Skilled? Or OMG So Not? I know that folks will probably respect my intentions, but still. One likes to get it right the first time if one can.

Hi, all!

Well, I figured that since I find interesting objects on a regular basis, I ought to join this community. So I set up an account for this express purpose!

In my town, there is a store called East Bay Depot, which sells all kinds of craft materials and unwanted objects, from buttons to toilet paper tubes to old textbooks. Oh yeah, and perhaps most importantly, discarded art!

I just picked up this lovely number today for $1.65:

The writing at the top/ bottom says, "hey joe/ take a walk on the wild side", and the writing coming out of the Marilyn Monroe heads says, "what is a superstar".

This is going to make an excellent Xmas gift!

Ok, that's me done with greetings for the day. I text spammed and updated Facebook with my Christmas greetings, so this was my last stop. I didn't Merry Christmas twitter, I don't know why. Maybe it's because I don't want to be trendy.

P.S. I finally succumbed to using one of those blinkie images. I quite like it. Maybe I should be festive more often.

Update: My favourite Christmas song EVER. Though I still love Snoopys Christmas.

Hello beauties,

I am so glad to be finished work for the holidays. Shortly, I will begin making spinach and feta pies, clean out the car, gather the kid who is not already at Grandma's and Dean, pick up our friend Paul and head out for Christmas Eve with the family.

The kids have been away the last couple of nights, J at Mom's and M with K's family. It's been so nice to just be quiet with my love. We made some home made truffles together and yesterday we had a friend over for dinner and just to hang out and share space with us. Open house and big dinner at our place Christmas day.
happy holidays friends.

12:23 pm - Not complaining, I swear. Just makes me feel better to write it all down.
I never understood why people got so stressed about the holidays. Unless you're having a bunch of family to your house and a big fancy dinner I always thought it was a bit hyped up. But this year, I understand.

I think what mainly did it was that someone just got fired at Subway - someone who had a ton of hours. Ross and I were there the day after it happened and so we were able to take a bunch of his hours so that we were working double shifts a lot of days (working 11-3, say, and then coming back 5-8 or 5-close). We can do this normally and it's not such a big deal, but I had no idea how much other stuff we would have to squeeze in at the same time because it's almost Christmas. All the time that hasn't been taken up working is used Christmas shopping, to such an extent that our house is a mess, there's food rotting in the fridge, we haven't been cooking/eating well, we haven't even decorated the tree! And all the Christmas shopping still isn't done . . . Add to this that I have a video editing project for my dad that I've had to keep pushing back to make time for work and shopping and what little bit of cleaning I can spare so as to not drive myself completely insane with trying to wrap presents in a messy house. We still need to get something for Ross's dad, his sister, and my dad (though I think I'm doing that one in Kansas). And he and I still have a little shopping to do for each other. That's a lot for two days! And my poor tree is sitting there with about a quarter of its lights on . . .

So those are the direct consequences of working way too much right before Christmas, but there are indirect consequences too. For instance: I usually consider myself really good at choosing presents, but I've been having a tough time finding things for Ross this year. I blame a bad ratio of Christmas stress to Christmas cheer, because I usually find gift shopping really fun, but this year every time I go out to find something for him I'm in stress mode. It's like, labored present shopping. Which sucks. Also I'm afraid my babies are going to turn into juvenile delinquents because we're never home with them! We usually never have to make an effort to spend quality time with them because we just have enough free time that it happens anyway. But I think they've been missing us since we've been gone all day and all night recently - and I've certainly been missing them! I did finally play with them for a while this morning and gave them some treats though, and that was good. In fact Sheena is climbing into my lap right now! And of course we haven't had as much time for each other either, and having less time to relax reflects in our interactions, and everything else for that matter.

Not to mention the thousand small things that have fallen through, like making a Christmas mix cd, or taking time to enjoy the holiday season in general. (Though several cups of hot cider have boosted that last one!) That and I'm constantly forgetting random things (like bringing presents to a friend at work) just because I have so much to remember right now. And PMSing.

And in the midst of all this, the carafe to our coffee pot broke! So we've been drinking bad Subway coffee, expensive coffee shop coffee, and homemade espresso. Waah.

So then last night was supposed to be the last shift we had to work until after Christmas. This way we would have time to catch up on some things before we leave for Kansas tomorrow morning. But then after we got off when we were sitting eating a sub, the phone rings. Jojo is sick, needs someone to work for him this morning. Of course no one else can do it (or maybe just no one else cares). So Ross had to go back to work at ten this morning! Gah. Poor Ross.

I've been trying really hard not to let it get to me too much, and I think I've been doing reasonably well. It's just that I've always been sort of morally opposed to getting too stressed about the holidays. And I do think everything will come together okay, I'm just sad not to have had more time to actually enjoy the Christmas season.

And now this snowstorm is coming, and I'm not even sure if we're going to be able to be with our families over Christmas! That's probably the worst part of all. It would be so sad to be stuck here and not to get to see family on Christmas. Or we might have to leave tonight, and not get to open our presents to each other till after we get back, and leave the kitties for FIVE DAYS!

Anyway, other than that things are good here, especially with a warm lovey kitty curled up in my lap. I think I'll go have another cup of cider and see if I can't get that tree lit up by the time Ross gets home. Merry Christmas to everybody if I don't see you until then!

Maybe I am a monster, maybe I have mislead myself. But how do I excuse that? I can't. I can only cop to it and except further consequences....why would I want that? I've had enough. Maybe not enough- but why would I ask for more? Seriously. Fuck you all. I'm expected to be balls-y and strong- but I'm NOT. I'm sorry. I'm not that person, especially the more I live in isolation. I can hardly even function around large groups of people anymore. I can't go home without being afraid of running into any of you. Imagine the fear I feel due to my own fucking problems. Let alone being singled out for them by a whole group of individuals. I'm sure a lot of you can sit around and make fun of this. Good for you, I hope it feels fucking great. Really- I hope it makes you feel fucking better.

Bucky- YOu're mis-understood and all good

09:57 pm - [I don't care for fancy things.]
Well, I'm finally done with the semester. My last paper for Things Don't Like Me was due at four o'clock today and I sent it in at 4:05 - hopefully that is acceptable. At this rate, despite how much I adored that class, I am just too tired to bother worrying much. Right now I am looking forward to five weeks of sleeping and reading and watching television. I am supposedly starting to watch all of Twin Peaks tomorrow, as the three people whose tastes I trust most in the world all list it as one of their favorite shows. (If not the favorite.) Sean (one of the three) apparently wants to do a watch-along (that's not a word) with me, but I don't know if he'll get around to it. I hope so. Anyway, I'm starting with the pilot tomorrow! Very excited. I am also planning to read War & Peace with [info]lucieandco, so my days of media shall be quite full.

Other than that, I am planning to sleep. I had four hours of sleep last night because I stayed up until four-thirty pretending to work on my paper and was in fact IMing with people being much more productive than I was (Julia and Sean) and reading the LJ of some woman who could literally be me-in-five-years. It was terrifying. She worked at the Cheapo on Snelling (which is roughly five blocks from where I go to school), loved Orange Juice and Top Chef, was doing a master's degree in English (I think) -- it was all very weird. Unfortunately, I have no idea what her username is so it may all have been a dream. I am planning to get a lot more sleeping done over the course of this holiday though.

Hm. I'm not certain there is anything else necessary to be said. Well, I might as well provide you with my schedule for next semester:

FREN 102 / French II / MWF 8:30-9:30
[Lab T 9:10-10:10]
ECON 119 / Principles of Economics / MWF 10:50-11:50
ENGL/RUSS 366 / Nabokov / MWF 2:20-3:20
ENGL 135 / Poetry / TR 1:20-3:50

Overall, not bad. I'm upset about having French at 8:30 a second semester in a row, especially since literally all my friends are in the 10:50 section, but I guess I can manage it. I'll catch up on sleep over break. Other than that, NABOKOV. and POETRY. So, so, so excited. Can I repeat, NABOKOV.

But yes. 2010 looks like it's shaping up to be an amazing year. If I can work everything out and make the right decisions. Anyway, I've already pre-ordered Contra (Vampire Weekend), Heartland (Final Fantasy Owen Pallett), The Golden Archipelago (Shearwater), and Realism (Magnetic Fields) - possibly Go by Jónsi as well. I can't remember for that one. AND I'm going to see Taken by Trees with El Perro del Mar at the Cedar on February 23, and possibly the xx and jj (such absurd touring partners) at the Varsity on April 10. And maybe Yeasayer at the Varsity on April 27. I would love love love to see the Clientele at the Cedar on March 15, but that's the Monday of my spring break -- still, if they really are breaking up/quitting touring after this tour I might stay until Tuesday so I can go. These are clearly all the important aspects of the year.

EDIT: And, of course, I completely forgot about the most important part of winter break -- The End of Time !!!!! Augh. That is going to be absolutely splendid. (And a little bittersweet, yes.) AND AH DAVID TENNANT IN HAMLET. HOW COULD I FORGET!! Um, just look at these. I'm not wild about the muscle shirt (is that what a muscle shirt is?) but aghhh I am dying with anticipation.

EDIT 2: AND it may blizzard here tomorrow. I'm absolutely gleeful. I love being snowed in, despite that being quite selfish! I just can think of nothing more lovely than being physically unable to leave your house. . . .well. Okay, that's a bit wrong. But there's still something joy-inducing about the prospect of ten to twelve inches of snow.

12:41 pm - For The Love of Churches (posted to wordpress 9/12/09, posted here a little too late)
Ok, so I was reading Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison as part of my urban fantasy kick. After I finished those Sookie Stackhouse books I was literally obligated to make book lists and overdo the reservations thing with the library. Anyway, in the above mentioned book a witch moves into a church with a vampire and a pixie, and...stuff happens. It wasn't a bad book, it didn't get me all obsessed like Sookie Stackhouse did, but I'll probably read the rest of the series.

What did get me all obsessive was the idea of living in a converted Church. Think about it...
Did it take more than two seconds to come to the conclusion that the idea is 100% fucking awesome? I think that's how long it took me.

I'd seen a church ruin re-construction on Grand Designs a while back now, and that piqued my interest, but it wasn't until reading Dead Witch Walking that my mind decided obsession might be the way to go. I have a mind that is good like that, it will let random things float around at the edges of my consciousness for years sometimes, and then something will set it off and I get all happily loved up and obsessive.

So I've been searching and dreaming, and collecting imagery.

This is the Tutahi Church in Waverly.

"It is thought that this church was built in 1870. A bible is known to have been placed in the foundation stone and the church is reputed to have considerable spiritual and healing power. In 2002, a local and national Maori public figure, Dalvanius Prime was buried at this site."
Source

It's the black door and window frames that are making me all googly-eyed over Tutahi Church. Having a bible in the foundations is pretty cool too, even though i'm not remotely christian.

I'm going to have to head out and take a picture of Tutahi Church one day. I know i'll never own it but one can dream. And I suspect this latest obsession may have sparked a need for random church photography, especially the white ones. I love the look of churches in general, but white wooden churches are the ones that truly rock my socks.

Look...

I love the white picket fence and the graveyard here. I know cemeteries are considered bad feng shui, but I love graves and cemeteries, so I think my pure love for such things could totally overcome something like bad feng shui.

Wonderful!

Although this church doesn't look as much like a church as I'd like the awesome fencing and the cross on the exterior make it wonderful. It also gives an impression of how I'd like my church home backyard to look.

Funnily enough there are a handful of churches for sale and Trademe at the moment. It's making me wish fervently for a lotto win. But until then, which is probably never, I'll indulge in daydreaming and hope that one day I can make enough money to own such a truly fabulous abode.

Happy Holiday

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all... and a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2010, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make [insert country or area of choice] great (not to imply that [country or area of choice] is necessarily greater than any other country or area of choice), and without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith, or sexual orientation of the wisher or wishee.

This wish is limited to the customary and usual good tidings for a period of one year, or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first. "Holiday" is not intended to, nor shall it be considered, limited to the usual Judeo-Christian celebrations or observances or to such activities of any organized or ad hoc religious community, group, individual, or belief (or lack thereof).

Note: By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms:

This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher at any time, for any reason or for no reason at all. This greeting is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. This greeting implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for the wishee her/himself or others, or responsibility for the consequences which may arise from the implementation or non-implementation of same. This greeting is void where prohibited by law. Offer invalid in Quebec.

Feeling utter despair at the thought of this man being executed. Please help by sending a msg to Gordon Brown. I desperately hope the British Government can intervene.

TAKING ACTION TOGETHER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

Less than a week to save Akmal Shaikh

Akmal ShaikhDear Supporter,

Akmal Shaikh is facing imminent execution in China. There are reports that his execution has been scheduled for 29 December 2009. Akmal, who is 53 and a father of five from north London, is believed to be mentally ill. He was sentenced to death for drug-smuggling on 29 October 2008 after an unfair trial.  Although he appears to have suffered for many years with mental instability and is likely to have bipolar disorder, the Chinese authorities have refused to allow him to be examined by a doctor. According to Article 18 of China's Criminal Law, a mental patient who commits a crime, and has not completely lost the ability to recognise or control his own conduct at the time, still has criminal responsibility but may be given a lighter punishment.

TAKE ACTION NOW

Call on Gordon Brown to urgently intervene on Akmal Shaikh's behalf. Please write your own appeal or copy the text below and send a message via the Downing Street website.

Dear Prime Minister, As you know Akmal Shaikh, a British national is facing execution in China on 29 December 2009. The Chinese legal system has not taken into account his serious mental illness. I am appealing to you directly to make immediate representations to China's President Hu Jintao.

Watching the end of Fly Away Home, tears streaming down my face and I'm all choked up, when Daniel says: "Hey, I got a question....How much money can you make selling real estate, anyway?"

He was a bit offended when Dave and I both burst out laughing.

A logical question, and he explained himself well - he was trying to figure out why the man in the bulldozer was so upset - but it still seemed suspiciously like he'd missed the whole point of the movie, and like our life resembles a certain sitcom.
